I’ve picked up the Sketchbook Cardigan that’s been laying dormant. I’ve got the body all done all I need to call this done are the sleeves and then the button band!

I started this sweater almost a year ago according to its Ravelry page. Fingers crossed I can actually finish this soon!

Guest Post: Knit along with the Artemisia sweater

Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark, the instructor on Craftsy’s Artemisia sweater, has kindly written a post about how her online class helps to take the fear out of knitting fitted garments. I’ve enjoyed the Craftsy classes that I have taken, and I hope you give hers a try too!

Have you ever been intimidated by a craft project? Being stressed out by yarn or fabric almost seems silly, but even as a professional knitwear designer, I still have moments where certain craft techniques are a little scary, foreign, and seem like too much to tackle on my own. These days, most knitting techniques are pretty familiar for me, but when I pick up a craft project for fun, I sometimes avoid pushing myself to try new techniques. One of my uncomfortable areas is sewing clothing. I love to do it, but things like making buttonholes and putting in zippers can make me avoid a project for weeks, or months, at a time.

Even when a craft is our hobby, and done for relaxation, it’s still good to push ourselves past the comfort zone here and there. I want to sew more complicated garments. There are many knitters who want to branch out from accessory projects to making sweaters. Classes are a great way to push yourself a little, try new things, and meet new people. But what if you don’t have a craft shop handy? What if you are too busy to make it to class?

This summer, Craftsy.com, an online learning platform, asked me to teach a knit along class with one of my original sweater designs. Craftsy is an online learning community that hosts expert instructors teaching fun, innovative classes. I filmed a series of short videos over the course of 3 days, which were edited into easy-to-access lessons that my students can stream anytime. You can fit in your learning time on your schedule, and once you enroll in the class, you always have access, your enrollment never expires! The site has cool features such as a personal notes section, where you can take notes on the class and your project, and 30 second replay, so you can watch my hands on instruction on repeat until it clicks with you.

I designed a class that would have fun new techniques to try, but not be too overwhelming for a newer knitter. The Seamless Artemisia Sweater class is now going strong, with more than 2.000 students knitting away on their sweater projects. Craftsy is an excellent, cost-effective way to learn new skills and meet other crafters, while getting expert help on your project. I answer students individually several times a week, often every day, helping them as they get stuck, have questions, or want advice. Many times, they just check in to let me know how they’re doing, since the videos are designed to be as thorough as possible.

Artemisia is a relaxed fit sweater, designed with a leaf lace panel, set-in, top-down sleeves, seamless construction and hourglass shaping, and knit-in pockets. Many students are modifying their projects to alter sleeve length and detailing, changing shaping for a custom fit, and modifying the length and pockets. What could seem like an intimidating sweater project is broken down into baby steps with lots of guidance and wiggle room, so my students have been able to approach the sweater one technique at a time. You’ll be able to watch and knit from cast on to finishing, right along with me and your fellow students! This has been a great teaching experience for me as well. I love seeing my students have breakthroughs as they conquer new skills and show off their projects.

I love the Craftsy platform for learning, so I’ve already signed up for a class by one of their expert sewing instructors on how to sew a custom-tailored button down shirt. I can’t wait to try new techniques in class!

I’d love to see you in The Seamless Artemisia Sweater class, or another Craftsy class with me! Sign up today for discounted enrollment.

WIP Wednesday: Sketchbook Cardigan body

The sketchbook cardigan now has a body!

I finished sewing the hem together this weekend. Unfortunately, it’s got a tendency to curl up but I’m hoping a good block will take care of it? Any suggestions to make it lay flat? I still have to pick up around the neck and the button band. I’m tempted to do that now and leave the sleeves for last. However, I am determined to have full length sleeves so I’m going to cast on for those right away. This is the sweater where I shall not cut corners just to finish with it sooner.

WIP Wednesday: Sketchbook Cardigan’s Revival

Since Autumn is officially here and the weather is getting a bit cooler ’round these parts, I’ve pulled out the Sketchbook Cardigan that I’ve been ignoring. I’ve made some wonderful progress!

It’s now firmly in the “impossible to photograph” stage. I’ve divided the stitches for the back and right front and now I’m working on the left front and neck. Then it’s going to the right front and knitting that up, knitting the back stitches and then the two sleeves. The sleeves are supposed to be worked flat and then seamed but I’m thinking about just working them in the round from the top down. After that, it’s the bottom ribbing and then the button placket.

I’m giving some serious thought to not doing any buttons but adding in a zipper instead. I’ve never done that before. Would I still need to work a placket if I chose to put in a zip? I should probably practice putting in a zipper onto knitted fabric first, yeah?

WIP Wednesday: The Never Ending Sketchbook Cardigan

I’ve blogged about the Sketchbook Cardigan twice already and I feel like that’s two times too many. Well, I’m pleased to say that I’ve made some real progress on it, though!

It doesn’t look like a whole lot from the photo (one of the more difficult parts of photographing a sweater in progress) but I only have an inch of the body left to knit! Up next is separating out the sleeve stitches and then knitting the sleeves and neck band. The last part is to pick up around the curled hem there and knit a few inches of ribbing so it stays flat. This is where I usually short change myself. I’m making a promise to knit the sleeves to their full length and knit the ribbing to the length directed in the pattern. I get so excited when I’m almost done with a project that I tend to get sloppy.

Here’s to stick-to-it-iveness! For more works that are in progress, check out the link list on Tami’s blog.

WIP Wednesday: Sketchbook Cardigan Part 2

I’m still plugging away at this cardigan. To be honest, I’ve kinda let it sit by the way side in favor of faster projects that needed finishing. But I’m at the halfway point for the body!

Sketchbook Cardigan

You can’t quite tell but I’ve got about 6.25″ out of 12″ done on the body. I’m so glad that this is a one piece cardigan because I don’t think I could stand having to make a right front and a left front after doing the back. Once I have the full 12″ done, it’s time to separate out the sleeves and finish the neck. Then I knit two sleeves and the button placket. I have a long car ride ahead of me this weekend so I might take this with me along with hexipuffs. I’ve been bitten by the puff bug again which means everything else has “suffered”.

I hope it’s been a productive week for everyone! For more WIPs, check out the Mr Linky on Tami’s blog.

It seems like ages ago, I blogged about the swatchI made for this cardigan. I’ve made very slow progress on it since then. The directions state (after casting on) to knit in plain stockinette for 12″. Did I mention that this is done in one piece? So my rows are LONG.

It’s been slow progress but I’m glad I have some TV knitting on my needles. I’m almost finished with my socks, actually so the next few days will be the big push to finish them off in time for Friday.

It’s Wendnesday so head on over to Tami’s and see what the blogosphere is working on.

Featherweight Cardigan in action!

As I promised, I took some fashion shots of the featherweight cardigan in action. This is a big deal for me because I’m pretty camera shy. But for you, dear reader, I’ll take a photo. Or two!

I’m happy to say that I’ve gotten over the flu bug I had last week. Unfortunately, the Sgt has now caught it. Oops.

I’m now saving up for a set of blocking wires to block out the body a little more. I’d like to come down a little lower than where it’s hitting me right now and I think I can block out a few more inches from it. It’s a little too cropped for my tastes right now.

FO Friday: Another Swatch!

I’m on a swatching roll.

Swatch

It's a swatch!

I must have been really sick to actually break out the needles and swatch for another sweater. (I’m feeling better by the way! Husband is not. Oops!) The yarn is LB Collection Superwash Merino and it feels so nice to knit with. I’m really going to enjoy working with this yarn. The swatch is for Lion Brand’s Sketchbook Cardigan.

This will be my first time working with a button band that will most likely close over my chest! I was really excited to see that the small is for a 37″. Fingers crossed it’ll work out in my favor. This is also one of those rare times when I use the yarn called for. The price is really economical and the yarn feels really really nice. I think I’ll be using more of this in the future even though I don’t knit much with DK yarn. Plus it’s a happy spring green.Though the temperatures here have been in the 80s, so I don’t know if I’ll have a real chance to wear a sweater at all. Oh well.

I FINALLY FINISHED THE FEATHERWEIGHT CARDIGAN!

Featherweight Cardigan

Featherweight Cardigan is DONE!

Look! It’s done! And it’s blocked out all nicely. It was too hot yesterday to wear it so in action shots will be forthcoming this weekend. I’m currently doing a happy dance. You just can’t see it.
