All About Feet

The Knitty blog finally collated and put up the information collected from their foot measurement survey. Some interesting points were discovered:

  • The ball of your foot is never smaller than your ankle. It’s either the same or about 5% larger
  • The ball of your foot measurement is 95% of the length of your foot. Meaning, they’re just about the same size!

This means that there should be better sizing for sock patterns. I do find that in some patterns, while the length is right, the heel/lower leg can be droopy compared to the cuff and length of the sock. It will be pretty cool to see what designers do with this information, if anything. Feet are so interesting. Who knew?

Speaking of feet, this is what my cast looks like:

Foot in air cast

(I’ve been having fun playing with the effects on Picmonkey.) Anyway, it’s removable, which is good. But it’s fugly and I need to correct that. I’ve decided to yarn bomb it but I’m not sure if I should do a big granny square in multiple colors or just knit something. My idea is to make a rectangle and then put buttons on the side so I can take it off.

What do you think, oh so smart and crafty readers? Knit or crochet? How would you make it?

Size Matters

This is another call for a survey. I was perusing Twitter today and saw this call for a survey help from Knitty:  Knitty’s technical editor for socks is asking knitters and crocheters (and muggles!) to measure their feet in the name of fiber science. Measuring out my feet, they seem proportional but I can fit into anything from a US women’s size 8.5 to 10 depending on anything and everything. And more than once have I tried on shoes at the store at the end of the day to find that they fit perfectly only to have them shrink (or grow!) over night after I’ve purchased them. This happens often with clothes as well; they fit yesterday, but not today. Sometimes I feel like I’m living in my own version of Wonderland.

So in the name of standardization and to help your fellow sock designer, partake in this survey!
