WIP Wednesday: Circle Socks

The short row heel socks I was working on have been frogged. Somehow, I managed to cast on 82 stitches instead of my usual 62. And in our move, I think I put that ball of yarn into a box which is now in storage. I’ve had the itch to work on socks so I treated myself to a ball of Crazy Zauberball.

The pattern is Anne Campbell’s Circle Socks. They were designed for self striping/crazy striping yarn. I’m planning on changing out the heel for a short row heel because I’m bent on trying out the technique. Plus, I think it’s an usual pattern.

WIP Wednesday: Short row heel socks

I’ve been meaning to try out this whole short row heel sock thing for some time. Most of the socks I’ve made have a flap and gusset heel which is nice but tends to sag around my heels. Apparently, I have very pointy heels. One way to make my sock heels less saggy is to go down a needle size for the heels. I haven’t tried that yet but I might next time.

For now, the curious monkey in me wants to try a new technique. I’ve done short rows before so the new-to-me part is applying them to sock heels.

The bait and switch is this: I haven’t started on the heel part yet. I can’t decide if I want to knit the leg a bit longer. Right now it’s at 3.5″ but I’m getting a wee bit bored with plain stockinette in the round. The yarn, however, is scrumptious! Sharp eyed readers may recognize it as yarn I picked up from Stitches South. It’s Cephalopod Yarn Skinny Bugga in Maxima Clam. It’s really soft but it’s been really good about not pilling like the Dream in Color Smooshy I used for my Mrs Tumnus shawl.

I’ve been busy finishing up some other projects but you’ll get to see those on Friday! For more works that are in progress, check out Tami’s blog.

FO Friday: Lydia Bennet Secret Stockings are DONE

I finished my Lydia Bennet socks yesterday!

lydia_bennet_socks_doneOf course, today is a grey and rainy day which means they took forever to dry. When I photographed them, they were still a little too damp to wear even after several trips through the dryer. Oh well, I’ll wear them later today/tomorrow.

WIP Wednesday: Lydia Bennet sock has a heel!

Yes, my second sock has a heel and I’m on the decreases. Which means this sock is in its awkward teenage phase. It sort of looks like a sock but still has a way to go. It’s also difficult to photograph it nicely.

I’ve got 4 out of 9 decreases done before I knit my way down to the toes. I am confident that I’ll have a finished pair of socks by the end of the month! If that does happen, I’ll be parading them around Stitches South.

Speaking of which, if you are going and would like to meet up, get in touch! For more WIPs, check out Tami’s blog.

WIP Wednesday: One sock down…

I finished one sock of two from my Lydia Bennet pink riot socks! And yes, I’ve been rewatching the BBC version from the 80s while knitting these. I’ll be honest, I don’t really care for Kiera Knightly and her version of the book.

I’ve got two out of four lace repeats done and then it’s on to the heel turn! After the heel turn is where I’m in for the long slog. I have very long feet (anywhere between 9.5″ to 10″ from the back of my heel to the tip of my toe) and I knit the length of the foot for about 8.5″ until I begin to decrease for the toes. Sometimes I wish I had dainty little feet. I could whip up socks in no time.

Yes yes, I’m still working on my Lydia Bennet socks. I’m almost up to the toe decreases and the horseshoe lace pattern is highly addictive.

There’s no way I’m going to have a finished pair by tomorrow but perhaps just one sock done and the other one started? I’ve also just started (as in I picked out the right sized hook) a really really big version of my lymph node. I’m hoping to make this large enough to cuddle with. Or beat up. Lord knows, during treatment I would swing between feeling super zen about my prognosis to feeling really enraged that it happened to me. It’s totally normal to feel that way but when you’re in the thick of treatment, it does give you reason to pause and wonder if you’re losing your mind.

I’m up to the heel turn on my socks!

Sock

I hope I can finish the pair by Valentine’s Day! I’m surprised at how quickly I’m knitting this sock up. It probably helps that I did two repeats less than the pattern calls for. Short socks for the win!

FO Friday: Amy March Slippers

They’re done! The Amy March slippers are done! My feet are very warm and very pleased.

I’m satisfied with the modifications I made. I picked up stitches along either side and knitted three rounds before using a regular cast off. While the original calls for ribbon and lace to be woven through the live stitches on the heel and arch and the sides, I didn’t have any ribbon or lace to use. Also, in a house with two rambunctious cats having stuff dangling from my feet would cause them to try to “save me” from the “evil” lace.

Another bonus is that I still have a quarter of a skein left over! It’s not enough to make another pair of slippers (I don’t think) but it means that I can do something more with my Candy Skein yarn. I’m not sure what that will be yet.

I’ve been sitting on this hank of Candy Skein yarn for about a year now. I wasn’t quite sure what to make with it until I found the Amy March Slippers pattern from Tiny Owl Knits.

Slippers.jpg

I’ve got one done and now I’m working on the other. I made a few modifications from the original. Namely, I have no ribbon and no lace to use as ties so I picked up 9 stitches on either side and knitted for three rounds before binding off. Instead of using Jenny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off, I used a regular bind off. My reasoning is that since a regular bind off is tighter, it will keep the slipper from falling off my feet.

Right now, just one one of my tootsies is warm and the other is quite jealous. I’ve promised the unshod foot and this slipper will be done by Friday.

WIP Wednesday: Lydia Bennet Secret Stockings

Jan 022013

Welcome 2013, and Happy New Year! I rang in the new year by working on a new pair of socks for me. I want to knit through as much of my stash and queue as possible this year. The pairing of yarn and pattern this time was really obvious:
Lydia Bennet Secret Stockings

The pattern comes from the 2011 issue of Jane Austen Knits. I love Pride and Prejudice and I wanted to try knitting a picot hem.

The yarn was a gift from my friend Kate. It’s from her company, A Hundred Ravens. The base is Iachos in the color way “I do!”. It’s 100% merino super wash and comes in at a generous 400 yards. The yarn is two ply and rather tightly spun so it should hold up well even with out nylon in it.

The story behind the pattern supposes that Lydia Bennet knew her sister was going to elope and was quietly telegraphing this secret in the sock she was knitting. I love the deeper pink/red flecks in the yarn. They’re spaced apart quite randomly making their appearance like another surprise.

The horseshoe lace is easy to memorize and these socks are working up rather quickly. This is going to be the most feminine socks I’ll most likely ever knit. I can’t wait!
