I finished the Mrs Tumnus shawl yesterday. I’m quite surprised at how quickly this knitted up. Here is the full shawl on the blocking mat:

And here is a detailed photo:

I cannot wait for it to finish drying. It will feel like a hug that is much needed today. I hope all of my Boston readers are safe. I used Dream in Color Smooshy and knitted this on a set of US7 circs.

It’s Friday and Tami’s put up this week’s link.

WIP Wednesday: Mrs Tumnus Shawl

After my hard week of being sick and miserable and dizzy (yay, ear infection! It’s like I’m 4 again!) I treated myself to a new knitting pattern. I’ve been eying Eskimimi‘s Mrs Tumnus Shawl for some time and I finally picked it up.

I haven’t gotten very far because I knitted the first wrong all WRONG. Apparently, it’s not ssk, yo for the whole thing. Reading is fundamental, ya’ll! Speaking of fun, the red and blue stitch markers were a gift (along with one of her Tool Tins) from Sarah the Sexy Knitter. The eagle-eyed among my readers might recognize the yarn. It was another swap gift from Underground Crafter last year. The yarn is Dream in Color Smooshy (100% merino) in the colorway Pansy Go Lightly. It’s slightly variegated from purple to deeper blues and brownish greens. The changes are very soft so I think it would work well in this rather straight forward shawl.

I’ve taken a small break from knitting on my sample sweaters to work on my mother’s shawl. There’s no way I’ll be finished with this in time for Christmas but that’s fine. It’ll be done when it’s done.

Not a lot of progress, but I’ve been a busy bee with other things. For more WIPs, check out Tami’s blog. And do make sure to take a break from any Christmas crazy making!

WP Wednesday: Another Shawl for Mom

My mom has been trying, with out much success, to make a triangular shawl for herself. She loves the one I made her last year but she wanted one that was longer. I was able to troubleshoot her problem over the phone (she was increasing unevenly) and offered to make another, longer one.

Mom's Shawl

I found another plain but not too dull pattern called Truly Tasha’s Shawl by Nancy Bush I’m using a skein of Berroco Vintage Chunky that I saved thinking it would look nice for Mom. The pattern calls for about three or four balls of yarn so I’ll have to buy some more. Oh darn, I hate going yarn shopping!

I’m very happy to finally cross something off of my list! The Swallowtail Shawl is off the needles and around my shoulders.

Here’s the revised list

WIPS

Sweaters

Socks

Cowls/Scarves/Neckthings/Shawls (This section is a total “maybe”)

Hands and Head

The Riff socks are coming along nicely. It looks like they’ll be finished in time for Husband’s birthday at the end of this month. I’m going to cast on for a new shawl for my mom. She’s politely asked for one that’s a bit longer.

Sandy left Mom and my sister Maritza without power up until yesterday. That was the only “damage” they had and our town is okay. The surrounding neighborhoods that are closer to the Hudson River (parts of Weehawken, Hoboken, North Bergen) are disaster zones. Most of those houses have ben condemned because they filled with sewage. None of that compares with the damage at the Jersey Shore. Places that I visited not too long ago simply don’t exist.

Yes, folks! I finished it! It’s done! It’s pretty! And it’s all mine!

I’ve blocked it out and it’s all dry. Now I just need somewhere to go so I can wear this with pride. A shawl pin would also be a nice touch. I’m really proud of how the nupps came out. Here’s a detailed photo:

What I didn’t realize is how difficult it is to photograph lace nicely. This is my first time trying to take a good picture of lace. I need to make a note to really work on it.

Here are the details:

I am going to wear this with much pride! For more FOs, check out the list over at Tami’s.

It’s been a while (2 months!) since I blogged about the Swallowtail Shawl. I ran into some trouble reading the third chart and loading it up into Knit Companion what I love about the program is that I can have the lace chart displayed in one “pane” while right underneath it I have the written instructions for the chart as well. What had me stumped was the way the charts were broken up into 3A, B, C, and D but the pattern said that after the center stitch is worked, the left half of the shawl is a mirror of the right half.

Instead of asking for help, I totally ignored it and did my own thing. Which resulting in not having the right stitch count and a very strange looking shawl. I think you know where this is going…yesterday I finally frogged back down to the end of chart 2. That means I frogged back about 30 odd rows. It was painful.

Swallowtail Shawl frogged back

You can’t really tell here (it’s so hard to photograph unblocked lace) but I still have to do some surgery to make it look nicer and get things back on track. I had to frog hubby’s Riff socks as well. Surprisingly, with all the undoing I’ve been forced to do I haven’t touched the bottle of Jack Daniels we have. Knitting: it’s one row forward, forty rows back. But I shall press on like a good little soldier!

Year of Projects: Knitting in Public

Thursday I had my infusion, and it went quite well. It didn’t take six hours as I was told but three. The infusion center at Vanderbilt is amazing! You’re put into a private room with two recliners, a flat screen tv that has a built in DVD player (they have DVDs you can borrow for free as well!) and a strong wifi signal. I was really comfortable so I kept working on my Swallowtail shawl.

I managed to do two budding lace repeats there. I’m now on repeat number 9 of 14. I’m itching to finish this part and move on to the next! I have other projects that are neglected thanks to this but it’s so pretty! I can’t help it.

I’ve been working furiously on this shawl along with a super secret sample knit. And since I can’t show you the super secret sample knit, I’ll have to share my progress on the Swallowtail shawl.

Swallowtail Shawl

I’ve been playing around with depth of field and doing some fancy things in post processing. So the colors above aren’t totally true to life. I’ve got six Budding Lace repeats done out of a total of 14! I’ve even included a life line just to be on the safe side. I’ve been quite surprised at how easy this part has been. I’ve actually been able to watch some TV and knit away with only occasional glances at my charts. I’m not sure if I’ll be finished in time for the end of the Olympics, but I’ll have quite a bit done.
