Pimped Out By My Mom!

Ha, I bet that caught your eye! But seriously, my mother pimped out my knitting skills. And to make matters worse, she low balled my price!

Wanted for Crimes Against Knitters

Don’t be fooled! She’s pure evil!

One of the teachers at her school is having a baby boy. Teacher Lady asked Mom if I would be willing to make a hat and blanket set and if so, how much. My Mom said, “Oh I don’t know. $80?” Teacher Lady said OK.

I call my Mom and she informs me of Teacher Lady’s request and that she said to TL that I would do it for $80. I tell her that’s way too low and besides, I don’t have the yarn on hand to make a baby blanket. I said at *least* $100 and besides, what color does TL want it? “Oh, I don’t know,” my mother says.

“Well, when does she need/want it by?” I ask.

“I don’t know,” says Mom.

“Okay…can you ask her next time you see her?”

“I rarely see her. Just make it in blue or something.”

The quakes that southern Cali felt this week were caused by my headdesking and facepalming.

“I can’t believe you pimped out my knitting, Mom. You’re a terrible chulo and you don’t even get all the information I would need.”

I’m not sure I’ll do this until I find out which Teacher Lady it is (is it one of the teachers who treats my mom nicely or like the hired help? My mom is one of the cleaning ladies), what color she wants and when she wants it by. Oh and if she’ll be willing to pay more. Until then, it’s a solid No.

  1. Lol at the earthquake comment, ahhh mums!

  2. it amazes me that people assume just because you knit you’ll just knock them something up for the fun of it. Good for you for sticking to your guns

  3. Good for you!

Luckily my mum is pretty hot on the “you can’t afford what it’s worth” script. With my gran, she knew I wouldn’t charge but told her that it would get done as and when I want to do it, and I got veto rights on the pattern. Actually, I haven’t picked up that scarf for a while, maybe I should!

  4. Oh wow. $80? To me that’s a good price but good for you for thinking highly of your time and effort. Blankets do take a lot of time and seem like forever.

  5. I pimp out Olivia’s skills but I stay the hell away from any quoting of pricing or commitments etc. I only say, let’s email OG and you guys fight it out or have her refer a friend who’s available. Mom probs thought she was doing you a favor.

  6. My mum did that once. Never EVER again will I knit something for someone I don’t know. Apparently she hated it, so I found myself offering to redo it AND I didn’t charge her extra. I thought the recipient would get it, being an artist and all, but apparently not. DON’T do it, I implore you!

    • My mom *finally* gave me more details but she said not to do it either. She said that I would charge for the cost of materials and that’s when teacher lady balked at the price.

Mom then said, ‘well if you won’t pay for cost of materials, then never mind!”

  7. Yeah! You STICK to your guns!
